OBJECTS AS HISTORY (Class 15)

We were supposed to pick an object from any one story of the Arabian Nights. The object which I chose ‘The Tale Of The Woman Cut Into Pieces, Three Apples and The Negro Rahamn’. Following is the report that I wrote:

THE TALE OF THE WOMAN CUTE INTO PIECES, THREE APPLES AND THE NEGRO RAHAMN

The Tale of the woman cut into pieces, three apples and the negro Rahamn partially. The story starts when the caliph’s appointed fisherman finding a heavy chest in the river, which contained a woman cut into pieces. The caliph orders his wazir to find the murderer. The tale then unfolds. The story is therefore about a man who wrongfully kills his beloved wife, cuts her into pieces and throws her into the river Tigris. He did so because a negro tricks him in believing she was his mistress. The negro had one of the three apples that the man had bought for his wife, the negro uses it as proof for his statement.

Thus, the story starts with the wife demanding for apples, the husband further struggles in finding the apples and lastly he ends up killing his beloved wife because of a misunderstanding regarding the apples. Thus, Apple was the most significant thing in the story and the entire story revolved around it. ‘Cultural significance of apple in Eden’

The story first highlights the importance of the fruit and further justifies the rare nature of it as well. The protagonist in the story is the man who wants to fulfill his ill wife’s wish of eating apples. The story further develops when the man believes a lie and misunderstands his wife’s loyalty. If the wife wouldn’t have demanded apples in the first place then the story wouldn’t have turned out the way it did. The story revolves around apples and how three apples affected the lives of more than three people.

The wife demanded apples as she had just recovered from her illness, the husband was so much in love that even though all his attempts for finding apples were constantly failing, he didn’t lose hope and didn’t stop until he found apples for his wife. Thus, the initial part of the story through apples showcases the love and bond that the couple shared. The story then showcases the amount of chaos and misunderstandings that an apple could create. The negro unconsciously ends up sparking up the misunderstanding between the couple, which finally leads to a very unfortunate event. The man ends up believing the slave and thus the mystery of one missing apple ends up with a woman chopped into pieces, locked away in the depths of the river Tigris. Thus three normal looking apples end up creating so much chaos and trouble in the lives of so many people. Therefore no other element in the story can match the significance of the three apples. The story started and ended with those three apples.

Apples have always been culturally and mythologically important, it appears in a lot of religious traditions. In the Book of Genesis talks about the forbidden fruit which does not identify but popular Christian tradition holds that Adam and Eve ate an apple from the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden. The unnamed fruit of Eden, therefore, became an under the influence of the story, The Golden Apples in the Garden of Hesperides. As a result, Apple became a symbol for immortality, knowledge, the fall of man and sin and temptation.

Thus even the story portrays the forbidden nature of the fruit.

OBJECTS AS HISTORY (Class – 14)

In today’s class, we learned about the history of India.

India was colonized by the British for over a century. The British had come to India with the purpose of trade but eventually colonized it. India was initially colonized by the East India Company but after the revolt of 1857, the power shifted to the crown itself.

We learned about the very long struggle that finally lead to the independence of India in the year 1947. Some of the prominent leaders were Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Jawaharlal Nehru.

INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR (Class 09 – 14)

We started our project by first making mindmaps. Following are the mindmaps that I made for my principle, I trimmed it down to styling and photography:

This helped me understand my principle better and everything involved in it.

For our final submission, we wrote a report on the designer’s influence on design. We had to select an inquiry question regarding our field of interest and then write a 1500 word report on it.

My question is – What makes the 1970s, The 1970s? My Report covers all the main elements of 1970s Fashion.

The Conclusion is about my photoshoot themed The Raging 1970s. Following is my final report.

Project II helped me understand the era in a much better manner, while the Studio helped me understand the creative process in representing the era, Seminar helped me understand the theory behind the process and also helped me get answers to my questions.

I learned about the elements and trends of the 70s in a much better manner through this process.

Also, I learned how to present my research.

INTEGRATIVE STUDIO (Class 09 – 14)

The project started with making mindmaps on what design is. We then narrowed it down to the fields and areas we are interested in. In my case, my most narrowed down topic was what I wanna pursue, Fashion Communication. While making the mindmaps I learned so much more about my field.

Following are some of my mindmaps:

After making the mindmaps I decided to go ahead with planning a photo shoot and styling. I decided to do a 1970s inspired photo shoot, wherein I selected three major themes from the era i.e., Hippie, Elegance and Flower power. I made several mood boards for reference. Here is one of my mood boards;

I then did a photoshoot, Here are a few pictures from the shoot:

I then decided to make posters of three pictures, depicting the three trends, Here are the edited ones:

For my final submission, I decided to present my pictures in the form of a coffee table book, Following are the spreads of my final booklet:

Today we finalized our idea for the final deliverable. We as a team decided to create a table to show the stability of the era, the legs being tires to show the significance of vehicles in the movies, the table will have a lamp to show hope that was a very major theme in almost all the movies given us and lastly show the mood of the era with the help of colour theory.

We started working on our model urgently.
