SPACE & MATERIALITY (Class – 05)

30.08.18

The class started off with a fun exercise, we were shown the abstract works of each other and we were supposed to tell what we think it is. My work was the first one to be hit by various opinions. My original sketch was of an angel but the abstract representation was considered as a cat, a mermaid etc. It was fun to discover the real piece after all the assumptions.
After this fun session we were instructed to convert our hand grip sketches into an abstract form using shapes on a tracing paper. Ma’am selected three sketches from our 10 sketches and we had to convert them. The process of figuring out how to convert the piece into an abstract form was fun, especially figuring out the right shapes for it. After the conversion this is what my sketches looked like:

In the second half we were told to convert these three sketches into models using any medium i.e., clay, foam, paper etc. I decided to explore the medium of clay and after getting the permission I went to the workshop to work on the clay but after a good amount of time, I realised that this medium isn’t for me. So, as a home assignment we were told to make at least two models from home and bring it in the next class. But the good news was that they didn’t have to be perfect, we were supposed to brainstorm and explore the process of abstraction.
