TIME (Class – 04)

Today we had to get the pictures related to our storyboard. These are the pictures that I clicked.

We had our review today but this review was very different from the reviews that we are used to, this review was done by our peers. Each student had to review each peer’s work, understand the reasoning behind their work, write a critical analysis and their areas of improvement.

All the suggestions that I received during this Review helped me a lot in improvising my work.

TIME (Class – 03)

18.01.19

We were supposed to complete the rest of our storyboards. After a series of failed attempts and discussions, I finally had all my three storyboards. Here are my other two storyboards:

But just when we thought we have it all figured out, ma’am told us that for our home assignment we have to portray our stories through the lens of our camera.

INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR & STUDIO II (Class – 02)

SEMINAR

Today’s class was solely dedicated to reading and discussing Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. Initially, we felt that the book is about various cities named after various women. It felt like the cities are more imaginary than real. But later we realized that the book isn’t about various cities but just one city, Venice. The writer tried describing the city through as many lenses as possible. We discussed about Sophronia, Fedora, Chloe etc supported with various illustrations.

We also discussed about various forms of writing and how they are useful. We learned about Palindrome, N7, Lipogram etc.

STUDIO

Today’s class was very different than the previous one. In the first half of our class, we saw a French movie named Amelie. The movie was about a young girl who had a very different perspective towards life. She had insane obseravtion skills and planned her each breath. The movie was very interesting and different. After the movie ended we discussed our likes and dislikes regarding the movie.

In the second half of the class, we were told to go out and click pictures keeping in mind the Gestalt Principles.

INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR & STUDIO II (Class – 03)

22.01.19

SEMINAR

The class solely dedicated to the Invisible Cities. We discussed the cites that were assigned to each one of us respectively. The city I was assigned was Eutropia. Here are the notes that I made for this city:

EUTROPIA

  1. Not one but many cities together form Eutropia.
  2. They are same in size but different otherwise.
  3. Only one city at a time is occupied, the rest remain empty
  4. As and when the lives of the inhabitants living in the city become tough they move on to the next city which is waiting new as ever for them to start fresh with new jobs, new wives, new life, a new identity. Inhabitants repeat the same scenes just the actors change.
  5. The city repeats it’s life.
  6. Among all the cities in the empire, this is the only city that ironically remains the same.
  7. I observed that this particular chapter is romanticizing escapism.

We discussed the metaphors used in various chapters to describe various cities for instance mirror, maze, trap, carpet etc. We also spoke about how change can be both tangible and intangible i.e., physical changes in the cities were tangible while the emotional changes were intangible.

Lastly, we were told to select six cities each and relate to some kind of design form. We were then briefed about our next assignment.

STUDIO

We first showed Ms. Saumya the six pictures featuring any one of Gestalt’s Principles. Here are my six pictures:

My principle was Similarity.

After getting ma’am’s opinions we were told to think of ideas to display our pictures in a way that even our display tells the principle we chose. Ma’am then decided to give this our home assignment and for now, we were told to select five cities from Invisible cities and draw three illustrations for each city.

Here are a few of my illustrations:

IMAGING II (Class – 02)

14.01.19

For today’s class, we first discussed layouts and different mediums of publishing. We then discussed the difference between the three software’s i.e., Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. InDesign is used to compile stuff and is mostly used for publishing and finalizing the end product m. We were then told to just explore the software, InDesign and try out the various things that it has got in stored for us.

After then we were told to make three different layouts on InDesign, first a comic book things on InDesign and try making our own layouts. Here are the layouts that I created:

INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR & STUDIO II (Class – 1)

09.01.19

SEMINAR

The class was partially about all of us defining about our respective spaces. But first, we discussed what creative thinking is i.e., a series of process or a process of organizing ones design and what critical thinking is i.e., gives a defense for ones design or very detailed thinking.

We had to then write about what we feel our space is, how we perceive our respective spaces are etc.

Here is what I wrote:

MY SPACE

All of us have this one space that makes us feel secure, comfortable and happy. For me, that place consists of nothing too extra but a comfortable and peaceful environment with my JBL blasting my favorite Drake songs. My bedroom is officially my space. I’m in my best mind space when in my room, curled up in my blanket with AC’s temperature on 18`c watching a Christmas movie on Netflix with lots of food around, gotta keep the tummy full or probably just sleeping. I don’t like having extra stuff in my room, just like I don’t like extra and pointless people in my life. I like going for a calm, comfortable vibe. Vibe really matters to me.

We then did a little peer review, we read out our write-ups and ma’am gave us a little insight as to why we might have written what we’ve written.

STUDIO

Our Studio class was a lot of fun. We did a fun activity where Ms. Saumya asked us to make groups of four or five, each group was given a word only they knew and then each group had to prepare a skit and enact the meaning of the word they are given and everyone else had to guess what the word is.

The word that my group got was Inscrutable, which means difficult to interpret. We prepared a fun skit and then present it in front of the class, Ms. Saumya, and the visiting faculty. It was a very fun exercise.

OBJECTS WITH HISTORY (Class – 02)

11.01.19

The class was more or less dedicated to the peer review and discussion of our last class home assignment. This helped me gain a lot of knowledge about various topics such as Sphinx of Giza, Byson, Wall of Jericho etc. The class ended with a little brief about what we will discuss in our next class which is Athens spartas.

Here is my assignment:

OBSIDIAN (Volcanic glass)

While excavating in Jericho, one of the world’s oldest cities, archaeologists found obsidian knives and blades that originally came from Catalhoyuk. Obsidian is volcanic glass that was abundant near Catalhoyuk. Obsidian products made up a big part of Catalhoyuk’s economy, it was one of the main reasons that the town of Catalhoyuk.

Volcanic glass is the amorphous (uncrystallized) product of rapidly cooling magma.

Seventy percent of obsidian rock is made of silica. Sometimes obsidian erupts directly from a volcano. The best obsidian is formed underground near a volcanic vent because those rocks will have limited impurities. Like all types of glass, When obsidian breaks, the fractures are very sharp especially when freshly broken, the edges are sharper than that of a surgical scalpel. This is why it was used to make tools in the Stone Age. Obsidian was used to make a variety of tools such as arrowheads, daggers, knives etc. It was one of the first things that people treaded for. The reason the town of Catalhoyuk, which is now Turkey, was so rich, about 8000 BC, was that they were selling obsidian.

I believe that obsidian was used as the main source of material for creating tools in the stone age because during that time there weren’t many materials discovered that could satisfy the criteria to make a good tool but volcanic glass or obsidian was partially suiting the criteria because of its abundance, the hardness, the dense sharp nature and also its smooth glassy structure.

IMAGING II (Class – 01)

07.01.19

The class started with sir giving us a quick recap of the basic terminologies in imaging i.e., JPG, PNG, SVG etc.

We were then explained what a minimalist travel poster and airline posters are and how they are related to our today’s assignment.

MINIMALIST TRAVEL POSTERS (REFERENCE)

We were then told to pick a city of our choice, research about it and make a poster. We were supposed to create it on Photoshop or Illustrator so that we can start fresh in the next class and start learning how to use In Design. I chose Delhi not because it was a safe option but because that being my hometown I  already know a lot about it.

Artboard 1.jpg

I enjoyed a lot creating this poster using different tools, trying to add the flavor of Delhi and making sure it looks aesthetic while not going overboard cause a minimalist poster.

SPACE & MATERIALITY (Class – 14)

22.11.18

In today’s class, we started working on our final model made some alterations in the basic nature of our idea. Our model now inhibits the action of arm fight rather than assisting it. For our final model, we first took a MDF Board and created two depressions for two elbows to fit in it. We then attached velcro beside both the depressions. In addition to this, in the centre of the MDF Board, we placed a strong rod and a ball kind of thing. Now, since the rod and the elliptical structure is placed in the centre, the two arm wrestlers cannot move their palms and hence, the action of arm wrestling is inhibited. We then got it approved by ma’am. Making this model was not just fun but also very interesting and triggered my mind on all the right spots.
